Container vessel collides with gantry crane at the port of Kaohsiung

At 11 a.m. local time on Thursday 3rd June, Police received a report that a dockside gantry crane had collapsed at the container yard of Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. at the Port of Kaohsiung’s Pier 70.

Prior to the accident, a container ship operated by Orient Overseas Container Line, commonly known as OOCL, was seen lurching dangerously close to the dock before colliding into the crane.

In a dramatic video of the incident, the massive steel crane can be seen suffering a catastrophic structural failure as it collapses onto the dock.

Containers are then sent tumbling like dominos as debris rains down from above.   Thankfully there have been no casualties with only a few dockworkers suffering injuries including 2 engineers that were trapped in the crane.

Horizon are monitoring the situation and are expecting some potential delays at Kaohsiung due to the incident and will be updating customers affected by these delays.
